Q.Enzymes are biocatalysts. They catalyse biochemical reactions. In general they reduce activation energy of reactions. Many physico-chemical processes are enzyme mediated. Which of the following reactions is not enzyme-mediated in biological system?

(a) Dissolving CO2 in water
(b) Untwining the two strands of DNA
(c) Hydrolysis of sucrose
(d) Formation of peptide bond

Dissolving CO2 in water is a physical process rather than a bond-breaking chemical reaction, so unlike the other three options it is not enzyme-mediated - option (A).

Chemical compounds can undergo two broad kinds of change. A physical change does not break any chemical bonds - a shift in shape, or a change in the state of matter such as ice melting or water evaporating, leaves the substance itself unchanged, only its form is different. A chemical reaction, by contrast, actually breaks existing bonds and forms new ones, producing new substances.

Dissolving carbon dioxide gas into water is fundamentally this kind of physical event: the gas molecules simply disperse and become surrounded by water molecules, without any covalent bonds being broken or made at that step. Because no chemical bonds are involved, this step does not require a biological catalyst.

The other three options, by contrast, are genuine chemical reactions carried out by specific enzymes in a cell: …
