Q.Assuming the water vapour to be a perfect gas, calculate the internal energy change when 1 mol of water at 100 °C and 1 bar pressure is converted to ice at 0 °C. Given the enthalpy of fusion of ice is 6.00 kJ mol−1^{-1} and heat capacity of water is 4.2 J/g °C.

Break the change into two steps — cooling liquid water 100 ∘C→0 ∘C100\,^\circ\text{C}\rightarrow 0\,^\circ\text{C}, then freezing at 0 ∘C0\,^\circ\text{C}. Only condensed phases are involved, so ΔU≈ΔH\Delta U \approx \Delta H. The total is ΔU=−13.56 kJ mol−1\Delta U = -13.56\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}.

Internal energy is a state function, so the overall change equals the sum of the two steps. Because no gas is produced or consumed at any stage, Δng=0\Delta n_g = 0 throughout and the Δ(PV)\Delta(PV) term is negligible, giving ΔU≈ΔH\Delta U \approx \Delta H for each step.

Step 1 — Cool water from 100 ∘C100\,^\circ\text{C} to 0 ∘C0\,^\circ\text{C}

Molar heat capacity of water:

Cp,m=4.2 J g−1 ∘C−1×18 g mol−1=75.6 J mol−1 K−1.C_{p,m} = 4.2\ \text{J g}^{-1}\,{}^\circ\text{C}^{-1} \times 18\ \text{g mol}^{-1} = 75.6\ \text{J mol}^{-1}\,\text{K}^{-1}.

ΔH1=Cp,m ΔT=75.6×(0−100)=−7560 J mol−1=−7.56 kJ mol−1.\Delta H_1 = C_{p,m}\,\Delta T = 75.6 \times (0 - 100) = -7560\ \text{J mol}^{-1} = -7.56\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}.

Step 2 — Freeze water at 0 ∘C0\,^\circ\text{C}

Freezing is the reverse of fusion, so

ΔH2=−ΔfusH=−6.00 kJ mol−1.\Delta H_2 = -\Delta_\text{fus}H = -6.00\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}.

Total change

ΔHtotal=ΔH1+ΔH2=−7.56+(−6.00)=−13.56 kJ mol−1.\Delta H_\text{total} = \Delta H_1 + \Delta H_2 = -7.56 + (-6.00) = -13.56\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}. …
