Q.You might have observed that amount spent on petrol is directly dependent on the distance travelled by the vehicle. Here one quantity affects the another. So here quantity of petrol consumed is an independent variable and amount of petrol bill is the dependent variable. Explain how this kind of relationship between such variables can be shown through a graph.

Such a directly-dependent relationship is shown on a Cartesian graph with the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis; here the plotted points form a straight line through the origin.

[!FORMULA] On a Cartesian (x-y) graph, the independent variable is conventionally plotted on the horizontal (xx) axis and the dependent variable on the vertical (yy) axis. If the dependent variable is directly proportional to the independent variable, y=mxy = mx (a straight line through the origin), where mm is the constant rate of change (slope). Here: petrol bill (₹) =price per litre×quantity of petrol (litres)= \text{price per litre} \times \text{quantity of petrol (litres)}.

  1. Identify the variables: independent variable = quantity of petrol purchased (litres); dependent variable = petrol bill (₹), since the bill amount depends on how much petrol is bought.
  2. Assign the axes: quantity of petrol (litres) on the x-axis; petrol bill (₹) on the y-axis.
  3. Compute sample points: if petrol costs, say, ₹100 per litre, then 55 litres →(5,₹500)\to (5, ₹500), 1010 litres →(10,₹1000)\to (10, ₹1000), 1515 litres →(15,₹1500)\to (15, ₹1500). …
