Mail services give you two different tools for two different problems: unsubscribe stops mail you once opted into (newsletters, mail groups), while block rejects a sender you never want to hear from. Here is a worked model answer:
A. Unsubscribing from a mail group / mailing list
- Open any message from the group or newsletter.
- Look for an "Unsubscribe" link. Anti-spam rules require legitimate bulk senders to include one — usually in the footer of the mail; Gmail additionally surfaces an Unsubscribe button at the top, next to the sender's name.
- Click it. Either you are unsubscribed instantly or a confirmation page/mail follows — confirm it.
- Some lists instead work by mail command: send a blank mail with the subject UNSUBSCRIBE to the list's admin address.
- For Google Groups specifically: open the group page → My membership settings → Leave group, or send a mail to
groupname+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com.
B. Blocking an email sender
Gmail:
- Open a message from the unwanted sender.
- Click the three-dot (⋮) menu at the message's top-right corner.
- Select Block "sender name" and confirm. Every future mail from that address is delivered directly to the Spam folder.
- You can also choose Report spam or Report phishing from the same menu, which additionally trains the filter and alerts the provider.
Outlook: Settings → Mail → Junk email → Blocked senders and domains → Add the address. …
