The basic rule is arteries carry blood away from the heart (usually oxygenated) and veins carry blood back to the heart (usually deoxygenated) — except in the pulmonary circuit, where this is reversed.

The chapter states: "Veins brings deoxygenated blood from the cells to the heart. Arteries take the oxygenated blood from heart to the cells." This holds for the systemic circulation that supplies the body generally.
