RuBP carboxylase and PEP carboxylase are photosynthesis enzymes, pyruvate dehydrogenase, cytochrome oxidase, hexokinase and lactate dehydrogenase are respiration enzymes, and ATPase is shared by both.

Sorting these seven enzymes requires identifying the specific pathway each one is known to act in.

  1. Enzymes of photosynthesis: RuBP carboxylase and PEP carboxylase are the carbon-fixing enzymes of photosynthesis — the former in the Calvin cycle, the latter in the initial carbon fixation step of the C4 pathway. Neither of these enzymes has any role in the respiratory pathway described in this chapter.
  2. Enzymes of respiration: Several of the listed enzymes act directly within the respiratory pathway covered here.
  • Hexokinase catalyses the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate at the start of glycolysis.
  • Pyruvate dehydrogenase catalyses the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvic acid to acetyl CoA in the link reaction.
  • Cytochrome oxidase (the cytochrome c oxidase complex, complex IV) is part of the electron transport system, transferring electrons to oxygen at the final step.
  • Lactate dehydrogenase catalyses the reduction of pyruvic acid to lactic acid during anaerobic (lactic acid) fermentation.
Note

All four of these enzymes act at specific, named steps within glycolysis, the link reaction, or the electron transport system, none of which are part of the photosynthetic pathway. …
