The SAI Khelo India Fitness Test battery includes nine items; any two can be explained through their standardised procedure, scoring method, and the physical quality they measure.

The SAI Khelo India Fitness Test is a nationwide school fitness assessment initiative launched to establish baseline fitness norms for Indian children and adolescents. It measures health-related and skill-related components of fitness across the 5–18+ years age group (Classes 1–12, with the 9–18+ bracket covering Classes 4–12 as specified in your question). Each test item follows a strict protocol so that results are comparable across schools and states. Understanding the procedure and scoring of these items equips you to administer the test correctly and interpret a student's fitness profile.

I will explain two commonly assessed items: the 50-metre Speed Test and the Sit and Reach Test.

1. 50-Metre Speed Test

Purpose: Measures speed and acceleration — the ability to cover a short distance in minimum time.

Procedure

  1. Setup: Mark a straight 50-metre track on a flat, non-slippery surface. Place cones or chalk lines at the start (0 m) and finish (50 m).

  2. Warm-up: The student performs a light jog and dynamic stretches for 3–5 minutes.

  3. Starting position: The student stands behind the start line in a ready position (standing or crouch start, as preferred). No blocks are used.

  4. Command: On the signal "Ready, Set, Go!" the student sprints as fast as possible to the finish line.

  5. Timing: A stopwatch is started at "Go!" and stopped the instant the student's torso crosses the finish line. Record the time to the nearest tenth of a second (e.g., 8.3 s).

  6. Trials: Each student gets two attempts with adequate rest (3–5 minutes) between them.

Scoring

  • The better (faster) of the two times is recorded as the final score.
  • The score is expressed in seconds (e.g., 7.8 s).
  • Lower time = better performance.
  • Age- and sex-specific norms classify the result into performance bands (e.g., Excellent, Good, Average, Needs Improvement), though the exact cut-offs are published in the official SAI Khelo India tables and vary by class and gender.
Watch out

Ensure the surface is dry and the student wears proper running shoes. A slippery track or improper footwear can cause injury and invalidate the test.

2. Sit and Reach Test

Purpose: Measures flexibility of the lower back and hamstring muscles.

Procedure

  1. Equipment: Use a standard sit-and-reach box with a measuring scale. The box has a vertical front panel and a horizontal top surface with a ruler fixed on it. The zero mark is at the edge nearest the student, and the scale extends forward (positive values) beyond the toes.

  2. Warm-up: The student performs gentle stretching of the hamstrings and lower back for 3–5 minutes.

  3. Starting position: The student sits on the floor with legs fully extended, feet flat against the vertical panel of the box, shoes removed. Feet are about hip-width apart. Knees must remain straight (not bent) throughout the test.

  4. Execution: The student places one hand over the other (palms down) and slowly reaches forward along the top of the box, sliding the hands as far as possible. The reach is held for about 2 seconds at the maximum stretch without bouncing. …
