A patient advised Anti-Retroviral Therapy is suffering from HIV infection, which can lead to AIDS, caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

When a patient is advised Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART), it indicates they are suffering from an infection that progressively weakens their immune system, making them vulnerable to various other diseases. This specific infection is HIV infection, which, in its advanced stages, manifests as Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

The causative organism for this devastating condition is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV belongs to a group of viruses called retroviruses. What makes retroviruses unique and particularly challenging is their genetic material, which is RNA, and their ability to convert this RNA into DNA inside the host cell using an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. This viral DNA then integrates into the host cell's genome, becoming a permanent part of it.

Note

The term "retrovirus" comes from "retro" meaning backward, referring to the reverse flow of genetic information from RNA to DNA, contrary to the usual DNA to RNA flow.

HIV primarily targets and destroys helper T-lymphocytes, also known as CD4+ T-cells. These cells are crucial components of our immune system, acting as "commanders" that coordinate the immune response against pathogens. When HIV infects a person, it enters these helper T-cells, replicates itself, and eventually kills them.

As the infection progresses, the number of helper T-cells in the body steadily declines. This gradual destruction of helper T-cells severely compromises the body's immune system. The patient's ability to mount an effective immune response against common infections, and even against certain cancers, diminishes significantly. This state of severe immune deficiency is what defines AIDS. …
