A sample does not beat a full census on accuracy — a census studies every unit and has no sampling error. But samples are widely used because they are economical, quick, practical and often the only feasible method, and a good random sample gives sufficiently reliable results.

Comparing samples and a complete survey (census)

  • Census (complete survey): every unit of the population is studied, so results are the most accurate and complete, with no sampling error.
  • Sample: only a representative part is studied and results are generalised to the whole.

Do samples give 'better' results?

On accuracy, a census is better because it leaves out no unit. So a sample cannot claim more accurate results than a full survey.

However, samples are preferred in most real studies for several reasons:

Advantage of samplingExplanation
CheaperFewer units to study → far lower cost
FasterResults are obtained quickly
Fewer resourcesNeeds less manpower and material
Sometimes the only optionFor very large or infinite populations a census is impossible; testing that destroys the unit (e.g. tasting) also demands sampling
