Land Degradation Factors — A First Look
Think about a piece of land that has been farmed year after year, with no rest, no manure, no care. Over time, the soil turns hard, crops grow smaller, and eventually nothing grows at all. That land has degraded — its ability to support life has fallen.
In Economics, land degradation means the decline in the quality of land as a productive resource. It is not just about soil turning barren; it includes any process that reduces the land's capacity to produce goods and services — whether for agriculture, forestry, or grazing.
Why does this matter in Economics?
Land is a fixed factor of production. You cannot make more of it. If the existing land loses its fertility or usability, the economy's productive capacity shrinks. For a country like India, where a large share of the population depends on agriculture, land degradation directly threatens livelihoods, food security, and national income.
The major factors that cause land degradation
These factors are human-induced (anthropogenic) more often than natural. Here is how they work:
1. Deforestation
Trees hold soil together with their roots. When forests are cleared for farming, timber, or urban expansion, the topsoil is exposed to wind and rain. The fertile layer washes or blows away — a process called soil erosion. Without the forest cover, the land becomes less productive within a few seasons.
2. Overgrazing
When too many cattle, sheep, or goats graze on a piece of grassland, they eat the vegetation down to the roots. The soil is left bare, compacts under the animals' hooves, and erodes easily. In arid and semi-arid regions of India (Rajasthan, Gujarat), overgrazing has turned large areas into desert-like land.
3. Over-irrigation (Waterlogging and Salinity)
In irrigated areas, farmers often apply more water than the soil can absorb. The water table rises, and the roots of crops sit in water — this is waterlogging. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind salts dissolved in it. Over time, the soil becomes saline — too salty for most crops to grow. This is a serious problem in the canal-irrigated belts of Punjab and Haryana.
4. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides
Chemical fertilizers give a quick yield boost, but they kill the microorganisms that keep soil healthy. The soil loses its organic matter, becomes acidic or alkaline, and eventually turns into a lifeless medium that needs ever more chemicals to produce anything. This is chemical degradation.
5. Industrial and urban waste
Factories and cities dump untreated effluents, heavy metals, and solid waste onto land. The soil gets contaminated with toxins that make it unfit for farming or even for safe habitation. This is pollution-induced degradation.
6. Shifting cultivation (Jhum)
In some hilly regions of Northeast India, farmers clear a patch of forest, burn the vegetation, and farm it for a year or two. Then they move to a new patch, leaving the old one to recover. But when the cycle becomes too short — because population pressure forces them back sooner — the land never recovers. The soil loses its nutrients permanently.
A simple way to see the pattern
Every factor of land degradation boils down to one idea: the rate at which we take from the land exceeds the rate at which the land can regenerate. Whether it is trees, grass, water, or soil nutrients — if we extract faster than nature replenishes, degradation follows.
How do we know land is degraded? (Indicators)
You do not need a lab test. These signs are visible:
- Declining crop yields — the same plot produces less year after year
- Gullies and rills — deep channels cut into the soil by running water
- White crust on soil surface — a sign of salinity
- Hard, cracked soil — loss of organic matter and soil structure …
Soil erosion is caused by several natural and human factors. …
Causes: deforestation, over-grazing, and running water/wind (plus faulty farming).
Three causes of soil erosion (the removal of the fertile topsoil) are:
- Deforestation – the cutting of trees and removal of vegetation cover leaves the soil loose and exposed, so it is easily washed or blown away.
- Over-grazing – excessive grazing by cattle removes the protective grass cover and loosens the soil.
- Action of running water and wind – running water (heavy rain, floods, rivers) and strong winds carry away the exposed topsoil (water erosion and wind erosion). …

›Reveal solutionSolution
The factor NOT responsible for land degradation is adoption of soil conservation measures — option (c).
An environment chapter question in Kerala Plus One (DHSE) Economics. Land degradation is caused by activities that strip or exhaust the soil: forest fires destroy vegetative cover, excessive chemical fertiliser damages soil fertility and structure, and deforestation exposes soil to erosion. Adoption of soil conservation measures — contour ploughing, affo …
- CBSE 2024Set ANNUAL1 markQ.‘Slash and burn’ is related to what?
›Reveal solutionSolution
'Slash and burn' = shifting cultivation (jhum).
'Slash and burn' refers to shifting cultivation (known as jhum in north-east India). In it, farmers clear a patch of forest land by cutting (slashing) and burning the vegetation, cultivate crops on the cleared land for a few years until its fertility declines, and then move on to a new patch. It is a cause of deforestation and l …
- CBSE 2024Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.Statement 1 : Land degradation is caused due to soil erosion and water logging. Statement 2 : Deforestation is the main cause of soil erosion.(a) Statement 1 is correct and statement 2 is incorrect(b) Statement 2 is correct and statement 1 is incorrect(c) Both are correct(d) Both are incorrect
›Reveal solutionSolution
Both statements are correct — they describe linked, not conflicting, causes of land degradation in India.
Land degradation in India results from a combination of natural and human-induced factors: deforestation, overgrazing, shifting cultivation without adequate fallow periods, over-irrigation (leading to water logging and soil salinity), indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and unsustainable farming practices. Statement 1 — that land degradation is caused by soil erosion and water logging — is a standard, well-documented fact. Statement 2 — that deforestation is a main cause of soil erosion — is also well established: forest cover binds topsoil with root systems and reduces the impact of rainfall runoff; large-scale clearing of forests …
- CBSE 2023Set ANNUAL1 markQ.Write the answer in one word or one sentence: What is the main cause of soil erosion?
›Reveal solutionSolution
Main cause of soil erosion: deforestation (loss of vegetation), aided by running water and wind.
Soil erosion is the removal of the fertile top layer of soil. Its main cause is deforestation — the cutting of trees and removal of vegetation cover, which leaves the soil exposed and loose, so that it is easily carried away by running water (rain, rivers) and wind. Other causes include over-grazing by cattle, faulty methods of farming and shifting cultivation. Hence the m …
- CBSE 2022Set ANNUAL1 markMCQQ.State whether the following statement is True or False : Degradation of land means gain of fertility of the land.(a) True(b) False
›Reveal solutionSolution
False — land degradation means a loss, not a gain, in land quality/fertility.
Land degradation refers to the deterioration in the quality of land caused by factors such as deforestation, over-grazing, over-irrigation leading to waterlogging and salinity, excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and soil erosion. It results in a decline in soil fertility, reduced productive capacity, and in severe cases, desertification. This is directl …
