Colonial India's foreign trade was shaped entirely by British interests. India exported cheap raw materials and imported British finished goods, and more than half its trade was tied to Britain. The resulting export surplus drained India's wealth rather than benefiting Indians.

The concept: trade as an instrument of colonial exploitation

British rule transformed India into an exporter of primary products and an importer of finished goods, using foreign trade to serve Britain's economy. This affected both the volume (composition) and the direction (partners) of India's trade.

The volume and composition of trade

  • Exports — India was made to export primary (raw) products such as raw silk, cotton, wool, sugar, indigo and jute.
  • Imports — India imported finished consumer goods like cotton, silk and woollen cloth, and capital goods produced in British factories.
  • Britain's monopoly — Britain maintained a monopoly control over India's exports and imports.

The direction of trade

  • More than half of India's foreign trade was restricted to Britain alone.
  • The remaining trade was allowed only with a few other countries, such as China, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Persia (Iran).
