Flexion and extension are one-plane movements a hinge joint can do; abduction, adduction, rotation and circumduction need a multiaxial joint like the shoulder or hip.

Practice each movement on your own body and notice which joint makes it possible:

  • Flexion: decreasing the angle at a joint (e.g. bending the elbow) — a hinge-joint movement.
  • Extension: increasing the angle back (e.g. straightening the elbow) — the hinge joint's opposite movement to flexion.
  • Abduction: moving a limb away from the body's midline (e.g. raising your arm sideways) — needs the multiaxial freedom of a ball-and-socket joint like the shoulder.
  • Adduction: moving a limb back towards the midline — the opposite of abduction, also at the shoulder or hip.
  • Rotation: turning a bone around its own long axis (e.g. twisting the arm at the shoulder) — the "multiaxial... including rotation" movement the chapter credits specifically to ball-and-socket joints. …
