An annual ring is one year's worth of secondary xylem growth, appearing as a distinct concentric band because of the seasonal difference between spring wood and autumn wood.

In woody dicot stems and roots that show secondary growth, the vascular cambium is active throughout the year but at different rates depending on the season. In spring, when water and nutrients are abundant, the cambium produces xylem elements that are wide, thin-walled, and lighter in colour — this is called spring wood (early wood).
