Annual rings are alternating bands of spring wood (early wood) and autumn wood (late wood) laid down each year by the cambium; counting rings estimates the tree's age.

In woody dicot stems, secondary growth is brought about by the vascular cambium, which is active throughout the growing period but not uniformly:

  • In favourable seasons (spring/rainy season, plenty of water and nutrients), the cambium is highly active and produces a greater number of xylem elements that are wide-lumened and lightly coloured — this wood is called spring wood (early wood), which is less dense.
  • In unfavourable seasons (winter/dry season), cambial activity slows down, producing fewer xylem elements that are narrow-lumened and darker — this wood is called autumn wood (late wood), which is more dense.

The alternating light spring-wood band and dark autumn-wood band, laid down over one year, together constitute one annual ring (growth ring), visible in transverse section as concentric circles around the pith.
