The opening and closing of stomata is controlled by reversible changes in the turgor pressure of the two guard cells flanking each stomatal pore, driven mainly by potassium ion (K+) movement and the resulting osmotic water flow.

Each stoma is bordered by a pair of guard cells whose walls are unevenly thickened — the wall facing the pore is thicker and less elastic, while the outer wall (away from the pore) is thinner and more elastic.

Opening mechanism: In light, guard cells actively pump potassium ions (K+) in (accompanied by chloride and organic acid anions such as malate) from surrounding cells, driven by proton pumps and light-activated processes; photosynthesis in the guard cell chloroplasts also increases the concentration of osmotically active solutes. This increased solute concentration lowers the water potential inside the guard cells, so water moves in from neighbouring cells by osmosis. As the guard cells absorb water and become turgid, their thin outer walls stretch and bulge outward more than the thick inner walls can, causing the pair of guard cells to bow apart from each other — this opens the stomatal pore.
