Stomata are guard-cell-bounded epidermal pores that carry out gas exchange and transpiration.

Structure: A stoma (plural: stomata) consists of a small pore surrounded by two specialised, kidney-shaped (bean-shaped in dicots) epidermal cells called guard cells. Guard cells have unevenly thickened walls (thicker on the inner side facing the pore, thinner on the outer side) and contain chloroplasts, unlike the other epidermal cells. In many plants, the guard cells are further surrounded by small cells called subsidiary cells that differ from ordinary epidermal cells. When guard cells absorb water and become turgid, their unequal wall thickening causes the pore to open; when they lose turgor, the pore closes.

Two main functions:

  1. Gaseous exchange — stomata allow entry of CO2 (needed for photosynthesis) and exit of O2 (a photosynthetic by-product), and the reverse gas exchange occurs during respiration. …
