Four key anatomical differences between a dicotyledonous stem and a monocotyledonous stem, as seen in transverse section:
- Arrangement of vascular bundles: In a dicot stem, the vascular bundles are limited in number and arranged in a single, definite ring around the pith. In a monocot stem, the vascular bundles are numerous and scattered irregularly throughout the ground tissue, with no particular ring arrangement.
- Open vs closed bundles: Dicot stem vascular bundles are conjoint, collateral and open - a strip of cambium lies between the xylem and phloem, allowing the stem to undergo secondary growth (increase in girth) over time. Monocot stem vascular bundles are conjoint, collateral and closed - no cambium is present, so monocot stems generally cannot undergo secondary growth.
- Ground tissue differentiation: In dicot stems, the ground tissue is clearly differentiated into a hypodermis, a wide cortex, an endodermis, a pericycle, and a well-defined central pith. In monocot stems, the ground tissue is not clearly differentiated into these separate regions, and there is usually no distinct pith (the central region merges with the general ground tissue, sometimes leaving a hollow centre). …
