Monocot and dicot stems differ mainly in the arrangement, structure, and secondary-growth capacity of their vascular bundles, and in whether their ground tissue is differentiated into distinct cortex/pith regions.

Four clear differences between the internal (transverse section) structure of a monocot stem and a dicot stem:

  1. Arrangement of vascular bundles: In a monocot stem, the vascular bundles are numerous and scattered irregularly throughout the ground tissue. In a dicot stem, the vascular bundles are limited in number and arranged in a single ring around the periphery of the ground tissue.

  2. Type of vascular bundle (cambium): In a monocot stem, the vascular bundles are closed (no cambium present between xylem and phloem), so there is no secondary growth. In a dicot stem, the vascular bundles are open (cambium present between xylem and phloem), enabling continued secondary growth.

  3. Bundle sheath: In a monocot stem, each vascular bundle is surrounded by a distinct sclerenchymatous bundle sheath. In a dicot stem, a bundle sheath around individual vascular bundles is typically absent.
