Tidal volume is the roughly 500 mL of air moved in one quiet breath, and across an hour a healthy person shifts on the order of 360000 to 480000 mL of it.

Of all the standard respiratory volumes, tidal volume is the one that describes ordinary, effortless breathing. It is defined as the volume of air breathed in, or breathed out, during a single normal breath — the gentle in-and-out that continues without any conscious effort. For a healthy human its approximate value is about 500 mL per breath.

To find how much tidal air is moved in an hour, we build up from that single breath using the normal rate of breathing:

  • On average, a healthy person breathes about 12 to 16 times each minute.
  • Multiplying the roughly 500 mL of each breath by that rate gives about 6000 to 8000 mL of air moved every minute, which matches the usual figure quoted for a healthy person.
  • An hour contains sixty such minutes, so the hourly total is about sixty times the per-minute amount — roughly 360000 to 480000 mL. …
