Pleural fluid lubricates the lung surface and helps couple lung movement to the chest wall, both essential for smooth, efficient breathing.

Each lung is enclosed within a double-layered pleural membrane: the visceral pleura, which directly covers the lung surface, and the parietal pleura, which lines the inner wall of the thoracic cavity. Between these two layers is a very thin film of pleural fluid, which serves two main functions: first, it reduces friction between the two pleural surfaces as they slide past one another during the repeated expansion and contraction of the lungs with each breath, preventing damage from mechanical rubbing; second, through surface tension, it helps hold the visceral and parietal pleura together, so that the lung surface is effectively pulled along with the movements of the thoracic wall and diaphragm durin …
