Meiosis is a reductional division in germ cells producing four genetically variable, haploid daughter cells; it is essential for sexual reproduction and creates genetic diversity.

Meiosis occurs in specialised reproductive (germ) cells and consists of two successive divisions — meiosis I (reductional, where homologous chromosomes separate) and meiosis II (equational, where sister chromatids separate) — following a single round of DNA replication.
