Mitosis occurs in somatic cells for growth/repair (keeping chromosome number constant); meiosis occurs in germ cells for gamete formation (halving chromosome number and creating variation).

Where and why mitosis occurs: Mitosis takes place in the somatic (body) cells of an organism, particularly in actively dividing tissues such as the root and shoot apical meristems in plants, and in the basal layer of the epidermis, bone marrow, and other renewing tissues in animals. Its purpose is to produce two genetically identical daughter cells from one parent cell, each with the same (diploid) chromosome number as the parent. This drives growth of the organism (increase in cell number), replacement of damaged or worn-out cells, wound healing/repair, and (in some organisms) asexual reproduction.

Where and why meiosis occurs: Meiosis takes place only in specialised germ-line cells within reproductive organs (e.g., in the anther and ovule of flowering plants, or the testes/ovaries of animals) during gametogenesis. A diploid cell undergoes two successive divisions (meiosis I and meiosis II) to produce four haploid daughter cells (gametes), each with half the parental chromosome number.
