Vertebrates are classified by their principal nitrogenous excretory product — ammonia, urea or uric acid — largely determined by water availability in their habitat.

1. Ammonotelic animals — excrete nitrogenous waste mainly as ammonia, which is highly toxic but very soluble, so it needs a lot of water to be flushed out safely. Found in aquatic animals that have unlimited access to water for its removal.

Examples: most bony fishes (teleosts), aquatic amphibians (e.g. tadpoles), aquatic insects.

2. Ureotelic animals — convert toxic ammonia into urea, which is far less toxic and needs comparatively less water for excretion. This is a compromise between toxicity and water conservation.

Examples: mammals (including humans), many terrestrial/adult amphibians (e.g. frog), marine cartilaginous fishes (sharks).
