Auxin is a growth-promoting plant hormone with several key roles: cell elongation, rooting, and apical dominance are three of its best-known functions.

1. Promotes cell elongation: Auxin (e.g., IAA, Indole-3-acetic acid) loosens the cell wall and stimulates elongation of cells in the stem and coleoptile, driving overall shoot growth; this is also the basis of phototropism, where auxin accumulates on the shaded side of a shoot, causing it to elongate more and bend the shoot toward light.

2. Induces root formation: Auxin promotes the initiation of adventitious and lateral roots; synthetic auxins (like IBA, NAA) are commercially used in rooting powders to help stem cuttings develop roots for vegetative propagation.
