A haplo-diplontic cycle alternates two multicellular generations -- a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte -- connected by fertilisation and meiosis.

Since a drawn diagram cannot be produced here, the pattern is described stage by stage, as it would appear in a schematic cycle diagram, taking a bryophyte as the representative example.

  • A haploid spore, produced by an earlier round of meiosis, germinates and divides repeatedly by mitosis to build up a multicellular, free-living gametophyte. In a bryophyte this gametophyte is the dominant, photosynthetic plant body.
  • The gametophyte differentiates sex organs -- an antheridium producing motile male gametes and an archegonium holding a single egg -- both of which arise by mitosis and so remain haploid.
  • The male gamete travels through a film of water to the egg, and the two fuse in fertilisation to form a diploid zygote.
  • The zygote grows by mitosis into a second, multicellular structure, the sporophyte. In a bryophyte this sporophyte stays attached to, and dependent on, the gametophyte, though in pteridophytes and seed plants the sporophyte instead becomes the dominant, independent generation.
  • Inside a sporangium (the capsule, in a bryophyte), certain sporophyte cells undergo meiosis, restoring the haploid number and producing spores once again. …
