Gymnosperms are heterosporous, seed-bearing plants characterised chiefly by having 'naked' ovules/seeds not enclosed in an ovary, along with a dominant sporophyte, reduced gametophytes, and typically wind pollination.

  1. Naked seeds: The defining feature of gymnosperms (literally 'naked seed') is that their ovules, and later seeds, are not enclosed within an ovary/fruit wall as in flowering plants; they are borne exposed, often on sporophylls aggregated into cone-like strobili.

  2. Heterospory: Gymnosperms are heterosporous — they produce microspores (which develop into the male gametophyte, the pollen grain) and megaspores (which develop into the female gametophyte, retained within the ovule).

  3. Dominant sporophyte, reduced gametophyte: As in all seed plants, the sporophyte (the plant body — root, stem, leaves) is the dominant, independent, long-lived generation, often woody and perennial, sometimes reaching great size and age (e.g. Pinus, Cycas, Sequoia). The gametophyte generation is highly reduced and remains dependent on the sporophyte.
