The d and f blocks differ in which subshell fills last, how variable their oxidation states are, and how they're classified/positioned on the periodic table.

  1. Differentiating electron: In d-block elements, the last (differentiating) electron enters the (n-1)d subshell (e.g. 3d for the first transition series). In f-block elements, it enters the (n-2)f subshell (e.g. 4f for lanthanides).

  2. Oxidation states: d-block elements show several variable oxidation states differing usually by 1 (e.g. Fe2+/Fe3+, Mn2+ up to Mn7+). f-block elements predominantly show one dominant oxidation state (+3 for most lanthanides), with only occasional +2/+4 states, and are chemically very similar to one another due to the lanthanide contraction.

  3. Classification/position: d-block elements are called transition elements and occupy groups 3-12 in the main body of the periodic table (3d, 4d, 5d, 6d series). f-block elements are called inner transition elements (lanthanides and actinides) and are conventionally placed as two separate rows below the main table.
