s-block elements (Groups 1 and 2) have their valence electron(s) in an s-orbital and are soft, highly reactive, electropositive metals that mostly form ionic compounds.

The s-block of the periodic table consists of Group 1 (alkali metals) and Group 2 (alkaline earth metals), where the last electron enters the s-subshell of the valence shell (general electronic configuration ns^1 for Group 1, ns^2 for Group 2).

Any three characteristics:

  1. Electronic configuration: valence shell configuration is ns^1 (Group 1) or ns^2 (Group 2), i.e., the outermost/differentiating electron is always in an s-orbital.
  2. Physical nature: they are soft (can be cut with a knife, especially alkali metals), silvery-white, low-density, low-melting metals. …
