Law of mass action: at a given temperature, reaction rate is proportional to the product of the reacting substances' molar concentrations, each raised to the power of its stoichiometric coefficient — e.g. for aA + bB -> products, Rate is proportional to [A]^a [B]^b.

Proposed by Guldberg and Waage, the law of mass action states that the rate of a chemical reaction at a given temperature is directly proportional to the product of the 'active masses' (in practice, the molar concentrations for solutions/gases) of the reacting species, with each concentration raised to a power equal to its coefficient in the balanced chemical equation.

Example: for a general reaction aA + bB -> Products,

Rate is proportional to [A]^a [B]^b

or Rate = k [A]^a [B]^b, where k is the rate constant.
