An oxidising agent gains electrons (and is itself reduced); a reducing agent loses electrons (and is itself oxidised) — the two act as partners in every redox reaction.

In any redox (reduction-oxidation) reaction, electrons are transferred from one species to another:

Oxidising agent (oxidant): a substance that causes oxidation of another substance by accepting electrons from it. In doing so, the oxidising agent itself gets reduced (its own oxidation number decreases). Common oxidising agents include potassium permanganate (KMnO4), potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7), oxygen (O2), and concentrated nitric acid (HNO3).
