Oxidation is loss of electrons (increase in oxidation number), while reduction is gain of electrons (decrease in oxidation number) — the two processes are opposite and always occur together in a redox reaction.

Five points of difference between Oxidation and Reduction:

  1. Electron transfer: In oxidation, a species LOSES one or more electrons. In reduction, a species GAINS one or more electrons.

  2. Change in oxidation number: In oxidation, the oxidation number of the species INCREASES (becomes more positive). In reduction, the oxidation number DECREASES (becomes more negative).

  3. Effect on oxygen/hydrogen (classical definition): Oxidation is the ADDITION of oxygen or ELECTRONEGATIVE element, or REMOVAL of hydrogen, from a substance. Reduction is the ADDITION of hydrogen, or REMOVAL of oxygen or an electronegative element, from a substance.

  4. Role in a redox reaction: The species that is oxidised (loses electrons) is called the reducing agent, because it causes reduction of the other species. The species that is reduced (gains electrons) is called the oxidising agent, because it causes oxidation of the other species.
