Figure — The answered alternative is Rutherford's alpha-particle gold-foil scattering experiment, and catalog fig-2-5 i

Rutherford's alpha-particle (gold foil) scattering experiment showed that atoms have a tiny, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by mostly empty space, with electrons revolving around it.

The experiment: Rutherford (along with Geiger and Marsden) directed a narrow beam of fast-moving, positively charged alpha (α) particles from a radioactive source at a very thin sheet of gold foil (about 100 nm thick). A circular screen coated with zinc sulphide (ZnS), which produces a flash of light when struck by an alpha particle, was placed around the foil to detect the scattered particles.

Observations:

  1. Most of the alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil without any deflection.
  2. A small fraction of the alpha particles were deflected through small angles.
  3. A very small fraction of the particles (about 1 in 8000) bounced back almost in the direction they came from, i.e. deflected by more than 90 degrees, some even close to 180 degrees.

Diagram (described): A radioactive source emits a narrow beam of alpha particles aimed at a thin gold foil; a circular ZnS fluorescent screen surrounds the foil; most particles are shown passing straight through the foil to the screen directly opposite the source, a few are shown deflected at small angles, and a very few are shown bouncing back near the source side.

Conclusions:

  1. Since most alpha particles passed through undeflected, most of the atom's volume must be empty space. …
