Hess's law: the net enthalpy change of a reaction is the same regardless of the number of steps, because H is a state function.

Statement: The total heat change (enthalpy change) accompanying a chemical reaction is the same whether the reaction occurs in a single step or in a number of steps.

Explanation: Enthalpy (H) is a state function, so the enthalpy change ΔH depends only on the initial and final states and not on the path followed. Therefore, if a reaction can be carried out by more than one route, the sum of the enthalpy changes of the individual steps of any route equals the enthalpy change of the direct reaction.

Illustration — formation of CO2:

Route 1 (direct): C(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g); ΔH = -393.5 kJ.

Route 2 (two steps): C(s) + 1/2 O2 → CO; ΔH1 = -110.5 kJ; then CO + 1/2 O2 → CO2; ΔH2 = -283.0 kJ.

ΔH1 + ΔH2 = -110.5 + (-283.0) = -393.5 kJ = ΔH (direct). ✓
