In the absence of an external force, the total linear momentum of a system stays constant.

The law of conservation of linear momentum follows directly from Newton's third law: for any two bodies in a system interacting only with each other (no external force), the force each exerts on the other is equal and opposite. This means the momentum gained by one body is exactly equal to the momentum lost by the other, so the total momentum of the system (the vector sum of individual momenta) does not change with time:
