The speed of efflux from a small hole at depth h below a liquid's free surface is v = √(2gh) — the same as the speed the liquid would gain in free fall through height h.

The speed of efflux is defined as the speed with which a liquid emerges from a small orifice (hole) made in the side or bottom wall of a container.

Consider a wide tank, open to the atmosphere, filled with liquid of density ρ up to a height h above a small orifice, also open to the atmosphere. Apply Bernoulli's equation between point 1 (the free surface, where the liquid level falls very slowly, so v1 ≈ 0) and point 2 (the orifice, where the liquid emerges with speed v2 = v):

P1 + ρg y1 + (1/2)ρv1² = P2 + ρg y2 + (1/2)ρv2²
