For an isotropic solid, volume expansion in all 3 dimensions combine to give gamma = 3 alpha.

Consider a cube of side L at temperature T. The coefficient of linear expansion alpha is defined by

dL/L = alpha dT, i.e. dL = alpha L dT

The volume of the cube is V = L^3. Differentiating with respect to temperature:

dV/dT = 3L^2 (dL/dT)

The coefficient of volume expansion gamma is defined by

gamma = (1/V) (dV/dT) = (1/L^3) x 3L^2 x (dL/dT) = 3 x (1/L)(dL/dT) = 3 alpha
