Because water is densest at 4°C rather than at its freezing point, deep water bodies never freeze solid from the bottom up — a layer of 4°C water always remains at the bottom, keeping aquatic animals alive through winter.

Anomalous behaviour of water: Unlike most substances, which contract continuously as they cool, water contracts only down to 4°C; below 4°C (down to 0°C), it actually EXPANDS as it cools further, so its density is maximum at 4°C, and lower both above and below that temperature.
