The ₹20,000 premium is shared by Giri and Shanta equally (₹10,000 each). In case (b) the existing ₹40,000 goodwill is first written off in the old ratio 1:1 (₹20,000 each) before the premium is recorded.

Concept

When a new partner brings cash as a premium for goodwill, it compensates the old partners for the share of future profit they sacrifice and is credited to them in the sacrificing ratio. Since Giri and Shanta shared equally and no new ratio is specified, they sacrifice equally, so the premium splits 1:1. A separate rule (from the accounting standards followed in NCERT Class 12 Accountancy) is that any goodwill already appearing in the books must be written off first — carried-forward goodwill is not allowed to remain when a new partner is admitted — and it is written off among the old partners in their old ratio.

Working Notes

  • Premium brought in by Kachroo = ₹20,000; sacrificing ratio of Giri : Shanta = 1:1
  • Giri's share of premium = ₹20,000 × 1/2 = ₹10,000
  • Shanta's share of premium = ₹20,000 × 1/2 = ₹10,000
  • Case (b) existing goodwill to be written off = ₹40,000 in old ratio 1:1 → Giri ₹20,000, Shanta ₹20,000
