Commercial banks accept deposits and advance loans (primary), create credit, and perform agency and utility services (secondary).

The functions of commercial banks are grouped as follows:

A. Primary functions

  1. Accepting deposits – banks accept deposits from the public in various forms: current (demand) deposits, savings deposits, fixed (time) deposits and recurring deposits, paying interest on them.
  2. Advancing loans – banks lend the deposited funds to businesses and individuals through cash credit, overdrafts, loans and advances, and discounting of bills, charging a higher rate of interest. The difference between interest earned and paid is their main income.

Through accepting deposits and lending, banks create credit (credit creation), expanding the money supply by a multiple of the initial deposit.
