The primary causes of species loss, often termed the "Evil Quartet," are habitat loss and fragmentation, over-exploitation, alien species invasions, and co-extinctions.

The Earth's biological diversity, a treasure built over millions of years, is facing an unprecedented crisis. The rapid decline in the variety of life forms across different geographical regions is a grave concern, threatening the stability of ecosystems and the services they provide. Understanding the forces driving this loss is crucial for any conservation effort. Historically, species have gone extinct naturally, but the current rates are alarmingly high, largely attributable to human activities. For instance, the colonisation of tropical Pacific Islands by humans led to the extinction of over 2,000 species of native birds, a stark reminder of our impact.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of 2004 documented the extinction of 784 species in the last 500 years alone, including iconic animals like the Dodo, Quagga, Thylacine, and Steller's Sea Cow, along with three subspecies of tiger. This accelerating loss is not random; it stems from a few major, interconnected causes, often collectively referred to as "The Evil Quartet" in ecological studies.

Here are the major causes of species losses in a geographical region:

  • Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: This is unequivocally the most significant cause of species extinction. As human populations expand and demand for resources grows, natural habitats are destroyed or converted for agriculture, urbanisation, industrial development, and other uses. Tropical rainforests, once covering 14% of the Earth's land surface, now occupy less than 6% and are being cleared at an alarming rate. The Amazon rainforest, often called the "lungs of the planet," is being cut down for cultivating soybeans or for conversion into grasslands to raise beef cattle. When a habitat is destroyed, the species dependent on it lose their home, food sources, and breeding grounds, leading to their decline and eventual extinction.

    Note

Habitat fragmentation occurs when large, continuous habitats are broken into smaller, isolated patches due to human activities. This is particularly detrimental to mammals and birds that require large territories to survive and reproduce, as their movement is restricted, and genetic exchange is reduced.

  • Over-exploitation: While humans have always relied on nature for sustenance, unchecked greed and commercial interests have led to the over-exploitation of many species. When biological resources are harvested at a rate faster than they can replenish themselves, populations dwindle. Classic examples include the extinction of Steller's Sea Cow and the Passenger Pigeon, both driven to extinction by relentless hunting and harvesting. Today, many marine fish populations are facing severe declines due to over-harvesting, threatening both biodiversity and the livelihoods of fishing communities.

  • Alien Species Invasions: When non-native (alien) species are introduced into a new geographical region, either intentionally or unintentionally, some can become invasive. These invasive alien species often outcompete native species for resources, prey upon them, or introduce diseases, leading to the decline or extinction of indigenous species.

    • A well-known example is the introduction of the Nile Perch into Lake Victoria in East Africa, which led to the extinction of more than 200 species of native cichlid fish. …
