In-situ conservation protects organisms in their own habitat; ex-situ conservation protects them elsewhere, in controlled facilities; separately, the greenhouse effect is the natural/human-enhanced trapping of heat by atmospheric gases.

In-situ conservation: This is the conservation of species (and the ecosystems/communities they belong to) within their own natural habitat. It protects the whole ecosystem, allowing species to continue evolving and interacting naturally. Examples in India include National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Biosphere Reserves, and biodiversity 'hotspots' — regions with exceptionally high species richness and endemism that are given priority protection, along with community-protected 'sacred groves'.

Ex-situ conservation: This is the conservation of components of biodiversity outside their natural habitats, under human-controlled conditions. Examples include zoological parks, botanical gardens, wildlife safari parks, and — for genetic material specifically — seed banks, gene banks, cryopreservation of gametes/embryos, and in-vitro plant tissue culture (which also allows storage of pollen, seeds and germplasm of endangered/economically important species for the long term).
