Insulin is composed of two polypeptide chains (A and B) linked together by disulphide bridges.

Insulin is synthesised as a longer precursor called pro-insulin, which contains an extra stretch of peptide called the C peptide. During maturation of insulin inside the cell, the C peptide is enzymatically removed, leaving behind two separate polypeptide chains — the A chain and the B chain — held together by disulphide (–S–S–) bonds.
