Proinsulin, the precursor of insulin, contains an additional C-peptide, which is enzymatically removed to produce mature, functional insulin.

Insulin is synthesised as a longer inactive precursor called proinsulin. Proinsulin contains three segments: the A chain, the B chain, and a connecting segment between them called the C peptide.

Before proinsulin can become biologically active insulin, the C peptide must be enzymatically excised. This processing leaves behind only the A chain and B chain, which remain joined to each other by disulfide bridges — this is the mature, active form of insulin secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas.
