Biogas is mainly methane produced by methanogens from organic waste; the plant has a digester, gas dome, inlet and outlet; it is used for cooking, lighting and power, and its slurry as manure.

What is biogas: Biogas is a combustible mixture of gases produced by the anaerobic (in the absence of oxygen) decomposition of organic matter such as animal dung and plant wastes by micro-organisms. Its chief constituent is methane (CH4), together with carbon dioxide and small amounts of hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. The bacteria that produce it are methanogens (e.g. Methanobacterium), which are also present in the rumen of cattle and in the sludge of sewage treatment.

Biogas plant (labelled diagram, described): A typical biogas plant consists of:

  • A concrete digester tank (fermentation chamber) built partly underground, where the cattle-dung slurry is broken down.
  • An inlet (mixing/charge tank) through which the dung-water slurry is fed in.
  • A floating gas holder (dome/gas storage tank) over the digester that rises as gas collects, with a gas outlet pipe fitted with a valve to supply the gas.
  • An outlet (overflow/discharge tank) through which the spent slurry is removed. …
