Toluene is treated with chromyl chloride (CrO2Cl2) in carbon disulphide (CS2), which forms a chromium complex; this complex is then hydrolysed to give benzaldehyde.
This is important because direct oxidation of toluene with strong oxidants (like KMnO4) over-oxidises the -CH3 group all the way to -COOH (benzoic acid); the Etard reaction is a controlled route that stops precisely at the aldehyde.
