Cannizzaro needs no alpha-H (self redox); aldol needs an alpha-H (C-C coupling).

Two important differences:

  1. Requirement of alpha-hydrogen:
  • Cannizzaro reaction takes place only with aldehydes that have NO alpha-hydrogen (e.g. formaldehyde, benzaldehyde).

  • Aldol condensation takes place only with aldehydes or ketones that HAVE at least one alpha-hydrogen (e.g. acetaldehyde, acetone).

  1. Nature of the reaction/products:
  • Cannizzaro is a disproportionation (self oxidation-reduction) in strong alkali: one molecule is reduced to an alcohol and another oxidised to a carboxylate salt. 2HCHO + NaOH -> CH3OH + HCOONa …
