The isocyanide (carbylamine) test is a characteristic, specific test for primary amines only.

When a primary amine (R–NH₂ or aniline, C₆H₅–NH₂) is heated with chloroform and alcoholic KOH, it forms an isocyanide (carbylamine), which has an extremely unpleasant, offensive smell:
