Calomel is Hg2Cl2 (mercurous chloride), used with liquid Hg and a KCl solution to make the calomel reference electrode.

Mercury(I) is unusual in that it does not exist as a simple Hg+ ion; it always occurs as the dimeric ion Hg2^2+ (two Hg atoms joined by a Hg-Hg covalent bond, each contributing +1 formally). Its chloride is therefore Hg2Cl2, not HgCl2 (which is mercury(II) chloride, a different, more toxic compound, 'corrosive sublimate').

Calomel (Hg2Cl2) is the key component of the saturated calomel electrode (SCE):

Hg(l) | Hg2Cl2(s) | KCl (saturated solution)

The half-reaction is: Hg2Cl2(s) + 2e- -> 2Hg(l) + 2Cl-(aq) …
