The SHE is Pt ∣ H2(1 bar) ∣ H+(1 M)\text{Pt}\,|\,\text{H}_2(1\ \text{bar})\,|\,\text{H}^+(1\ \text{M}) with 2H++2e−⇌H22\text{H}^+ + 2e^- \rightleftharpoons \text{H}_2 and E∘=0E^\circ = 0 V.

Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE): the reference electrode assigned an electrode potential of exactly 0.00 V at all temperatures.

Construction / labelled diagram (to draw): A platinum foil coated with finely divided platinum black (platinised Pt) is sealed to a Pt wire and dipped into an acid solution in which [H+]=1 M[\text{H}^+] = 1\ \text{M} (1 M HCl). Pure hydrogen gas at 1 bar pressure is bubbled through the solution over the electrode, at 298 K (25 °C). The Pt black adsorbs H2\text{H}_2 and lets it equilibrate with H+\text{H}^+ ions. Labels: Pt-black electrode, H2\text{H}_2 gas inlet at 1 bar, 1 M H+\text{H}^+ solution, connecting wire.

Cell representation:

Pt(s) ∣ H2(g, 1 bar) ∣ H+(aq, 1 M)\text{Pt(s)}\ |\ \text{H}_2(g,\ 1\ \text{bar})\ |\ \text{H}^+(aq,\ 1\ \text{M})

Half-cell reaction (written as a reduction): …
