Infrared radiation = heat waves, central to the greenhouse effect. Gamma rays = highest-frequency EM wave, used in cancer therapy.

Infrared waves are called heat waves because they are readily absorbed by the water molecules present in most materials (including living tissue), which increases their thermal (vibrational) motion and hence their temperature.

Infrared radiation plays an important role in the greenhouse effect: sunlight (which contains mostly visible and some UV/IR) warms the earth's surface, which then re-radiates energy as infrared radiation; greenhouse gases (CO₂, water vapour, methane) in the atmosphere absorb and re-emit this infrared radiation back towards the surface, trapping heat and keeping the earth's average temperature warm enough to sustain life.
